everbright volunteers visit heep hong society’s special child care centre (tai wo hau centre)

on 23 may 2014 (friday), everbright’s volunteer team visited heep hong society’s special child care centre located in tai wo hau. this centre provides professional training and education mainly to the children with special needs such as autistic disorder, sensory impairment, mental/physical handicap, behavior/learning problems, etc.

through volunteers’ visit and training activities in a joyful learning environment, we aim to enhance the social and communication skills of children with special needs, support them to overcome their obstacle in verbal communication and stimulate their interest in interacting with others, which helps them integrate into the community more easily. at the same time, the volunteers are able to know the children better so as to enhance an inclusive society.

to have a better preparation for the visit, tutors from heep hong society have arranged a briefing and training session in advance for the volunteers to teach them the skills needed to interact with the children. on the day of visit, 11 volunteers from china everbright took part in various group games, sing-along songs, ipad interactive learning games with around 30 children with special needs, and finished by having refreshments together. it was full of fun and laughter, both the volunteers and children enjoyed themselves very much.

apart from that, china everbright charitable foundation has donated two ipad tablets to the centre to help the children learn more effectively using computer education software. in return, the children have hand-made a thank-you card to express their gratitude to the volunteers’ love and care to them.

after the visit, all the volunteers said that they have more understanding on the children with special needs and enjoyed the time spent with the children. some of the volunteers expressed their enthusiasm in volunteer works and hope to revert to the community in their leisure time.
